Body paragraphs:

Do I avoid the problem with some of the WL1 papers of discussing each text separately while making no attempt to examine the two texts side by side? Here is an example of a paper that DID compare and contrast the works directly:
EG: In the previous example, Samya's father does not act cold-heartedly. Rather, his action demonstrates that desperate situations, i.e. mounting indebtedness, necessitate clean-cut, definitive, emotionless measures. Survival takes precedence. Similarly, in Roy's The Tin Flute, the protagonist Florentine faces challenges. She must help her parents eke out a tough life in spite of growing unemployment and awful conditions in wartime Canada. Like Samya, Florentine has adults who symbolize the ideal and the real.
Do I cite specific passages from the texts in EVERY BODY PARAGRAPH so that the reader can HEAR their words which will validate the points you are trying to prove?
NOTE: If you nailed an A or a high B on WL1, you can blow off having direct evidence in every paragraph if you have demonstrated an ability to use the occasional body paragraph to transition or drive home a point that is particularly important. If you earned anything below a B+, I would play it safe and include direct evidence if I were you. It's your call.
If I cite short quotations, do I do so correctly? EG: "This is a short quotation" (Stoppard 27).
Do I attempt to smoothly integrate some textual evidence? EG: This infatuation is always what causes Florentine to "[slide] down the hollow of her couch where she slept each night beside her small sister Yvonne" (Roy 206).
Do I correctly punctuate a long quotation?:
Of course, a long quotation must be a minimum of three lines in length. A number of you chose quotations that were prefect for the point that you were trying to prove. However, a handful of you chose quotations that were either too brief to get at the meaning of the text or were fairly superficial.
Do I avoid using too many long quotations to pad my paper to reach the word count? Use long quotations sparingly. If I see them, you better justify including all of that by thoroughly analyzing the significance of that particular quotation.
Do I avoid stringing together a bunch of tiny paragraphs in my essay that are underdeveloped? Remember, on your WL1 papers, a handful of kids wrote an excessive number of choppy 1-2 sentence paragraphs that were grossly underdeveloped.
Do I have AT LEAST three sentences in every body paragraph? Usually, really, people expect at least 5 sentences. You can pull off three sentences if it's a transitional paragraph done effectively.
Do I avoid the tendency to end a body paragraph with direct evidence? Rather, do I end body paragraphs with either a transitional sentence or analysis of shared evidence? Again, if you are an exceptional writer, you can get away with ending a body paragraph with direct evidence if the evidence effectively concludes the paragraph.
Do I avoid writing a cut-and-paste essay with excessive use of evidence poorly explained?

A note on word count for the creative option: The statement of intent MUST be included in the word count. The length of the statement will depend on the nature of the piece attempted and should, normally, not exceed 500 words. However, where the assignment takes the form of a single piece of writing, such as a short poem, the statement may be longer than the body of the assignment and longer than 500 words. Whatever the length of the assignment itself, the total number of words must be between 1000 and 1500 words.

The Statement of Intent:

Does the statement of intent include a brief explanation of the following?:

the work(s) on which the assignment will be based (NOTE to class of 2009--- a few kids lost major points last year because they pulled in additional books, poems, song lyrics etc. You can NOT do that! Meet the parameters of the assignment and make sure you select the appropriate works.)
the nature of the task to be engaged in, including considerations such as audience, register, form
the aspects or elements of the work(s) on which the student intends to focus
how the student intends to explore these aspects or elements
Another note to the class of 2009: I had a few papers that were a really bizarre hybrid of option B and option C. Instead of constructing an original work like a poem, a diary entry, a letter to an editor, students wrote essays employing some sort of analogy or some sort of deconstruction of the text with a unifying vehicle as their organizing idea. In essence, they straddled the fence between options B and C and in doing so did neither. Don't do that.
Be very, very careful with option B. I think some kids think that 'creative writing' means that absolutely anything goes. That simply isn't true. Meet the parameters set.

Body:

While I am given this opportunity to exercise imagination and ingenuity, am I achieving a deeper understanding of the work(s) being explored to demonstrate an increased appreciation of the writer?
Do I do what I said I would do in my statement of intent?
Class of 2009: Is the focus of my work on the texts themselves or do I stray too far from the texts writing a poem or play that is perhaps a reflection of my life or the life of my peers with only a peripheral reference to the texts cited?
If I am mimicking the voice of the writer(s) in my assignment, do I capture that voice in terms of diction, sentence structure, etc?

Works Cited Page:

Do I have a works cited page?
Is it done correctly using MLA style?
If a text is a translated text, do I correctly cite the translator?

DISTRIBUTION OF FOOD IN SLUMS

Last week, all the captions and the new IB-1 students were taken for distributing food in the slums near our school.We were very fortunate for this.Mr. Paulis is the only teacher present in that school.We have had such experiences in the past during our C.A.S,but this time it was different. Earlier we had visited people living in villages,who had a pretty comfortable life. This experience was unique, since we met people who were living in slums.The degree of hardships that were faced by the slum people were more than that of the villagers. After such visits,the only thought that stays in our minds,makes us realise how lucky we are to live a life, which we are living right now.

IB Business and Management Trip

We went to Ludhiana and Dehli for a Business and Management trip. Our aim, was to find out how businesses work in relation to daily routine, motivation techniques, human resource management and also motivational techniques. We have studied quite alot of the syllabus in Business, including production and manufacturing. Therefore, we decided to visit some factories to see how everything is done. We set of to Ludhiana where we visited Arnav's father's factory. Here we saw how terry towels and garments were produced. We learnt it was not an easy task to produce garments and to control a large number of staff. Powerpoint presentations were presented to us which told us their motivational techniques, how the human resource management controls the team, and how the goods are actually manufactured and produced. We also visited Dehli where we visited Da Milano. This shop is a private limited company and is a franchisee of an italian brand. They sell pure leather coats, bags, shoes and household furnitures. Over there, we saw how they use promotional techniques in times of recession to stop the business from falling down during certain seasons. Overall, both businesses put our theory into practical which enhanced our leaning tremendously. Apart from the work, we also visited the Golden temple in Amritsar which is a beautiful must see place. This one week was exciting as well fun. A break from studies where we took more practical based approaches to things which we had learnt. It was a great experience with great moments to be remembered always.

CAS Trip to Tirthan

My CAS trip to Tirthan was amazing. This trip has been the most difficult, exciting experience, by combining creativity, action and service togetheras part of the IB curriculum. This trip has also taught us some important laws of human nature which we tend to forget everyday due to our busy lifestyles. The whole team has experienced being out of their comfort zone's and learnt how to take the initiative to do something new. I am sure that everyone has expanded their comfort zone's which is very beneficial in future life. Taking risks, has also made us stronger and more confident when it comes to doing things which are new. This was the most worthwhile accomplishment in the trip. I participitated in all activities which has bought out a better person in me and also made me alot more confident than i wasbefore. The activities we did were:- trekking, rock climbing, trust fall, and overnight mountain survival. The most difficult tasks of all were trust fall and overnight mountain survival. Trust fall is an activity which holds high levels of risk. If there is no trust in the team and good communication skills, someone could definitely be injured severely. Although, the whole class worked together as a team and built some trust in one another. This trust was put in action when everyone took the fall without fail. I was very worried about whether or not the team would be able to save me or not, although there was someforce of trust which made me take the risk of falling. I was very proud when i completed this task. One of the best moments of the trip was when we visited the local village. Over here, we communicated with some local villagers who told us about their daily lifestyles. Although for me language was a barrier, i still tried to communicate effeciently and confidently. In knowing the simple lifestyle of these villagers and seeing how happy they are brought a smile on my face and made me realize how lucky i really am. Seeing their struggles, made the team and i to some sort of service which will help them in their life. After alot of thought, we all came up with the idea of performing a play which tells the villagers how important education is in society. Maybe this would influence them on sending their children to school instead of working and cleaning all day. This may change some things in the village long-term and be beneficial. This was a worthwhile experience which has changed everyone's attitude into becoming more positive.

dOWN tHE vALLEY Of Tirthan...

All my classmates went for an educative on-site program to Tirthan valley in association with an organization known as iDiscoveri. Tirthan valley is situated in Himachal Pradesh, near Banjar in Kullu district, and down the valley is the base campus for iDiscoveri, 15 hours drive from Dehradun.

There was a magnificent view of the hills all around and snow-capped peak of the Tirthan Glacier. We were engaged in multiple activities like rock climbing, hiking, overnight trekking, camping out, leave no trace, trust fall, organizing a ‘Bal Mela’ for village kids which emphasized on the importance of education, health and hygiene. All the activities taught us the values and importance of teamwork, trust on team members, taking risks, and initiatives.

I personally feel this experience of mine has allowed me to look within myself and understand myself and my team.

BNM Trip...

The most awaited trip of them all was the IB BNM trip we had planned for this trip 2-3 months back and finally the day came to leave for the trip. We started from our school at 10:00 in the morning our first stop was Ludhiana, so it was 5-6 hours drive which was interesting and we had lot of fun. We reached Ludhiana in the evening around 5:00 o' clock. We checked in our hotel which was Maharaja hotel, we settled and then we had our dinner early and slept because we all were really tired. the next morning we got up early got dressed got into our cars and went to visit a terry towel making factory which was under SEL manufacturing after getting familiar with the towel making then we had our lunch and after lunch we visited a spinning plant were the thread was made these were the things that we did on the first day. The second day we again visited a spinning plant, a dying plant and the corporate office of SEL manufacturers. The third day we had presentations related to Human resource management, and textiles. The fourth day we visited a garment factory and saw how a garment was made and then we had presentations with the heads of the company's departments of marketing, etc.The next day we left for Delhi we left at 8:30 in the morning and reached Delhi at 4:00in the evening first we visited Damilano Italia where we learnt about there retailing skills and some information about there company which ended in an hour. After that we had our dinner and moved towards our hotel which was outside Delhi in Indirapuram. the next morning we left for the head office of Damilano Italia were we got to know about there human resource management and lots of other things and then we went back to our hotel rested for a while then we packed and moved towards the train station, we had our train at 11:50pm we boarded and reached Dehradun at 5:40 in the morning. we came to school by the school bus and reached by 6:30 in the morning by this our trip came to an end.

we started from our school at 5:00 in the morning we sat in our bus, we were just 14 including our teacher, Mr. Shantanu.we had a long journey it was for 15-16 hours drive but we never felt uncomfortable because the bus was very good and comfortable...... we reached there at night had our dinner and went off to sleep because of the long journey. we started our day early and did many kinds of activities which built us up into a team and reformed us..... all the other days where full of tasks and challanges, and our biggest challange was to organise an educational fair, for the people in the village, with a limited amount of budget..... we came back from the camps on 26th March.... we all had fun out there with our instructors who were Gaurav, Tara and Viru.

As the title suggests...... the Tirthan trip that IB-II went in their camps with youreka was so far the best CAS trip i have experienced..... It was like a combination of all the three activities and these activities were random nothing was planned but everything went well as we expected not only we did some CAS work and increased our CAS hours but also had fun not only at the camp but also on the way to tirthan....... It was one of the experience that i would remember for a very long time because the groupism and the ego problems in our class was forgotten and i could see a whole new IB-II batch that was ready to take their internals on and help anyone who had problems in his/her studies...... The IB-II batch has reunited and has formed a single group in which there is equality and respect for all..... these kind of trips should be held more often....

This poem develops a simple idea which is found in a familiar, if outdated phrase. Half-caste as a term for mixed race is now rare. The term comes from India, where people are rigidly divided into groups (called castes) which are not allowed to mix, and where the lowest caste is considered untouchable. In the poem John Agard pokes fun at the idea. He does this by using puns, and also looking at the work of artists.

The poem opens with a joke - as if “half-caste” means only half made (reading the verb as cast rather than caste), so the speaker stands on one leg as if the other is not there. Agard ridicules the term by showing how the greatest artists mix things - Picasso mixes the colours, and Tchaikovsky use the black and white keys in his piano symphonies, yet to call their art “half-caste” seems silly.

Agard playfully points out how England's weather is always a mix of light and shadow - leading to a very weak pun on “half-caste” and “overcast” (clouded over). The joke about one leg is recalled later in the poem, this time by suggesting that the “half-caste” uses only half of ear and eye, and offers half a hand to shake, leading to the absurdities of dreaming half a dream and casting half a shadow. The poem, like a joke, has a punchline - the poet invites his hearer to “come back tomorrow” and use the whole of eye, ear and mind. Then he will tell “de other half/of my story”. Though the term “half-caste” is rarely heard today, Agard is perhaps right to attack the idea behind it - that mixed race people have something missing. Also, they often suffer hostility from the racial or ethnic communities of both parents. Though the poem is light-hearted in tone, the argument of the last six lines is very serious, and has a universal application: we need to give people our full attention and respect, if we are to deserve to hear their whole “story”.

The form of the poem is related to its subject, as Agard uses non-standard English, in the form of Afro-Caribbean patois. This shows how he stands outside mainstream British culture. There is no formal rhyme-scheme or metre, but the poem contains rhymes (“wha yu mean...mix red an green”). A formal device which Agard favours is repetition: “Explain yuself/wha yu mean”, for example. The poem is colloquial, written as if spoken to someone with imperatives (commands) like “Explain yuself” and questions like “wha yu mean”. The punctuation is non-standard using the hyphen (-) and slash (/) but no comma nor full stop, not even at the end. The spelling uses both standard and non-standard forms - the latter to show pronunciation. The patois is most marked in its grammar, where verbs are missed out (“Ah listening” for “I am listening” or “I half-caste human being” for “I am half-caste”).

My presence at home, the preceding winter during vacations led me to an unforgettable journey of letters and words. Don’t frown upon it, because it was not me sitting and trying to acquire knowledge, but the one trying to spread it. Yes, I was performing the art of teaching, a divine practice. It is considered to be a privilege in many holy books as well as Mythologies. I was given a chance to teach students between the age groups 3-7 years.

Basic maths, English and general knowledge were some of the areas where mutual interchange of knowledge took place. It was as if I were with few angels, sharing each other’s experiences. I know now that it is not a simple job yet the best way of giving back to the human race.

May be the Switzerland winter camp was my last camp with my friends from the class 11^th batch. I had a blast. Since class 7^th we have been together staying with each other day and night. The class was the same and even the dorms. But now time has changed I had to think about my career ,my stream but this does not mean I have to leave them behind. I shifted from ISC to IBD. But this did not lead me to forget them, but got me more closer to them, as I always try to spend whatever time I have with them. I am so grateful to god for giving me such friends , who care for me and value me and trust me. Thank you god for making me such a lucky person for giving me such people by my side. Now I have a confidence that what ever may come we will over come it together. Thank you , you all to be there with me always whenever I needed you all the most.

We left the campus on the 3rd of December for New Delhi. We had a connecting flight to Geneva via Vienna. It was an Austrian arrow carrier. After the 8 hrs tiring flight when we reached the geneva airport we were given a warm welcome by the staff of Les Elfes. We drove directly down to campus of Les Elfes which was situated at small town called Verbier . the campus was small but a very luxurious and a high-tech one. We all were allotted a room for 4. The campus had two dinning halls, wi-fi connectivity, 24hrs hot water supply, 24hr medical facilities, theatre, disco and even a recreation hall. We were there in Verbier for 8 day and Les Elfes made us feel at home. We were the first ones to arrive for this winter session. Later we were joined by two other schools and another group of indivdulas. In all there were about 150 students on campus ageing from 8 to 22. It was a good experience for us to interact with such school which were from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Phuket . this tour helped the IBD students a lot as they had received 48 hrs of Action in their CAS portfolio. After 8 days of skiing, 7 hrs a day all the students from our school were able to complete level 3 of skiing and were on going level 4 i.e. they were eligible for going down on the Red slope on their own.Switzerland is considered to be a destination for oldies and honeymooners but skiing is only thing that attracts the young population. Skiing being a tough and a dangerous sport, it was not easy for us in the initial stage. We were tired of wearing those 12 kg boots and skiing in – 11 degrees celcius. But when we had learned the initials it was really fun skiing down the slope. After all we had beaten the Saudis in the down slope hurdle race, who were already experienced in skiing and were coming there for the second time. At the end of the camp their was a prize distribution evening medals, certificate and awards were awarded the last evening. Our school won two gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze. Our school was also given the title of the “Most chilled out school “ on the Les Elfes winter camp 08.The camp was a great experience for us but the routine was not easier than the school after all. The wake up call was sharp at 6:00 am we were supposed to be there in the dining hall for breakfast at 7:45. The camp which we had thought would take us away from the early wake up calls of school was itself with a tight schedule. After the breakfast which ended around 8:15 we were supposed to go to the locker room and get dressed in our 12kg skinning boots and report to the ski rack area. Each student had a rack of their own where their skis were placed. Picking up our skis we were loaded in the buses and we used to be off to the slopes for seven deadly hours. We were served lunch on the slopes which included a cold slow and a cheese sandwhich. After we were over with the skiing we were sent back to the camp at around 3:00. This was the time we all waited for ,after reaching back to the camp we all got dressed in our casuals and were ready to go to the town. Everyday we had an option of either staying back on the camp or going to the town. We were allowed to leave after 4:00. We all used to hang around together in the town till 6:30 and were supposed to report back at the camp by 7:00 . The town was a about a 5km walk from the camp so we used to start back early. After we had signed back in the camp we were sered hot dinner. After dinner were allowed to hang around the campus with our friends. The lights out used to be 10:00. We were so tired after the hectic day that the lights out time was not forced upon but we our self used to hit the bed early.Verbier was a very small town but it was a town which did not have fast food restaurant but had a Rolex showroom. It was a peaceful and friendly town to the tourists. It had restaurants , shops, departmental store and a bank which only opened for 5 hrs a day. The evenings were very lively in Verbier as it was all very lighted and decorated the shops used to shutdown at around 5 and all the restaurants and cafes used to be opened during that time. It was a very beautiful place.During the journey we had experienced a very memorable moment of our life. The moment we experienced was something like this. While on the airport at New Delhi after we had crossed the immigration and were relaxing at the lounge. We heard three ‘bangs’. The airport was on a panic . The passengers on the airport was made to lie on the floor. We were informed that these three bangs was of gunfiring outside the airport. Due to this fake firing outside the airport, for security reasons the immigration , the security check and even the aircrafts were sealed for 3 complete hours. It was torturing. When the security checks opened the airport was on a chaos there were only 7 security checks opened and more than 100 people were there in each line. But somehow we managed and were able cross it in 3 hrs. after all the flight was delayed .This was some of our experiences .

How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while awise man and a wise guy are opposites? How can overlook and oversee be opposites, while quite a lot and quite a few are alike? How can the weather be hot as hell one day and cold as hell another?
You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language in whichyour house can burn up as it burns down, in which you fill in a form by filling out and in which an alarm clock goes off by going on.
English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflectsthe creativity of the human race (which, of course, isn't a race atall). That is why, when the stars are out, they are visible, but whenthe lights are out, they are invisible. And why, when I wind up mywatch, I start it, but when I wind up this essay, I end it!

This time no leading/guiding questions were given and both HL and SL students had to interpret and analyse according to their own reading and judgement. Class participation is an important aspect of student learning. When students speak up in class, they learn to express their ideas in a way that others can understand. When they ask questions, they learn how to obtain information to enhance their own understanding of a topic.

Class participation also is a valuable learning tool for teachers. Through students' questions, you learn what they don't understand, and can adjust your instruction accordingly. Just as speaking in front of a group doesn't come easily to many adults, however, speaking up in class is a struggle for many students. That struggle might manifest itself in the classroom in a variety of ways -- not volunteering to answer questions, not asking for help, not speaking up in small-group activities, even not talking in class at all.

As a teacher, you will have greater success spurring a student to speak up if you can figure out why he is reluctant to participate. Whatever the reason for his reticence, your role is not to force him to speak; doing so will more likely make him clam up than open up. Your role is to provide a supportive, encouraging climate that helps him feel more comfortable, more confident, and less fearful of speaking up.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

Create a climate in which students are encouraged to ask questions. Make it clear to students that you want them to ask questions. Point out that their questions help you by indicating where you might not have been clear. Emphasize that there is no such thing as a dumb question, and make sure to not allow students to ridicule a classmate's questions.

Take the student's questions and comments seriously. The student's reluctance to ask a question or volunteer an answer might be due to a lack of confidence. Help him gain the courage to participate by showing respect for his contributions and giving thoughtful answers to his questions. Listen attentively while he is talking; do not interrupt him. Try to find something positive to say about his comments, such as "That's an interesting point. I never thought about it that way" or "That's a really creative idea." Orchestrate his speaking experiences to ensure success. Consider the following strategies: · Ask questions you are confident he can answer. · Let him know before class that you will be calling on him for a specific question so he can prepare an answer. If you arrange to call on him, do it early to lessen anxiety. · When he does respond, reinforce his comments with positive statements and an encouraging smile. · If you ask a question and he blanks out or says nothing, restate the question (perhaps in a yes or no format), or lead him toward the right answer by providing a clue. Or you might let him off the hook by giving the answer, while saying something like "That was a tough one," and then moving on.

Be patient when waiting for a response. The student might need more time than normal to organize his ideas and formulate a response. As a result, he might be slow about answering a question. If so, give him extra time by waiting for an answer a little longer than you usually do. If other students are clamoring to answer, ask for their patience as well. Monitor class participation. Monitoring will help you determine who is and who is not participating, and learn whether a particular student is improving. A simple way to keep track of student participation is to keep a seating chart on your desk and place check marks next to the names of those students who do contribute.

Provide opportunities for the student to practice his communication skills by taking the time to talk with him privately. The idea is to help the student feel more comfortable talking with one person so, in time, he will feel more confident speaking up in front of a group. Find a few minutes every so often to talk with him about his favorite activities and interests. Or speak with him when he is doing an art project or a writing assignment. Ask questions, so he can explain what he is doing, but be sure the questions are non-threatening.

Give the student responsibilities that require communication. You might have to nudge the student to assume those responsibilities, but don't hesitate to push a little if you are confident he can do them successfully. For example, you might encourage him to be a class messenger, a teacher assistant, a peer tutor, or the leader of a small group working on a topic he is familiar with. Make sure to praise his performance even if he struggles with the task.

Observe the student for evidence of a speech or language problem. A student might be reluctant to speak up in class because he has a speech defect or difficulty putting his thoughts into words. Articulation problems usually are readily evident to teachers, however, difficulties in language usage can be more difficult to identify. If your observations suggest a communication problem, bring that to the attention of your school's speech-language specialist, who might want to do an evaluation.

Hey ,

I think you all I mean IBD students must have missed me during 20th Nov to 23rd of Nov as I was not in the campus. What? You didn't miss actually you had party because there was noone to run after you for commentary. But how long you could skip see I am back. Anways jokes apart during that time I had some informative session with IBD teachers all over the world in Mumbai. It was just level one workshop still I could learn few technicalities of internal assessment. Which I think will be very useful in guiding my present IB batches. Other than that I also came across with few other IB teachers and got to know their way of teaching IB in their schools. Also I was able to clear the doubts of many new IB teachers who have just got in to IB which increased my morale. I made some very good friends there as you can see in the pic. Finally it was a good time spent.

Last week IBD-1 and IBD-2 went on a CAS Trip to nag tibba where we all had fun..... it was my first CAS Trip and also my first trekking where all of us were one with nature. I enjoyed this trip the most because my rucksack compared to others was very light and i was running al my way up and down....... on the whole it was a nice trip and i enjoyed a lot and acheived much higher than i expected.... thank you chiranjeet sir for organizing such a wonderful trip and also the arvind sir who lead us in the mountains of Nag Tibba... i hope to have more trips like this in the future.

THE BREATH TAKING EXPERIENCE ..........................

The trek of my life………….. never expected that I could have walked so many kilometres with so heavy rucksacks which included all my clothing …. Mat …… sleeping bag etc….etc……… not only did I carry myself but also helped others climb and even come down……….. we had to wash our dishes all by our self ……… we had conserve water so that we do not waste it ….. clean water was limited after all ………….. I learnt a lot from this trek …….. we all grew close to each other ….. learnt about each other ……. Helped each other when required ……… I would never ever forget this CAS trip …… as it was the last CAS trip with IBD-2 ……… a lot of corporation was there ,….. and we had a great time ……. We learnt how to work as a team…… hats off Advait, Snehashish and Yashpal sir for all they did …. 4 us……

My first ever CAS trip was an awesome experience. I got to do many different sorts of things like trekking, rafting etc. 5 days and 4 nights with your friends was not only fun but educational as well. Not only did I get close to nature, I got close to my IB mates as well. Along with the breath taking scenery I saw the real meaning of teamwork and got to know more about my fellow mates. I would finally like to add that I will always remember this trip with fondness in my heart.

The trip to nag tibba and nature was excellent and we had enjoyed a lot..... It was a five day trip we did trecking, interacting with villagers, rafting and service. all the activity which we did gave me a good experince. Trecking to nag tibba was tuff as it was 8000feet high. Rafting in the river ganga with a life jacket helped me coming out of fear of rafting. By this trip we know our weakness with strength.

The trip to Nag Tibba and its surrounding areas was fantastic and i had lods of fun..... we all had fun climbing up and also comming down.. when we did trking we used to split up in groups and walk at our paces it was really adventurous and thrilling and was full of action.. we helped each other at different point of time and helped ourself also to climb up the top and reach the skies... we saw the sunrise at 10,000 feet it became one of my memorable moments and cannot forget how beautiful was it when the sun rose in somne seconds... there were such moments out there at those hreights and they have embeded in my mind and would remain there forever and i look forward to trips like this in the future.......

We proved our worth....

The 1^st CAS trip for IBD-1 and the final one for IBD-2 finally concluded on the 13^th evening, 2008 November. For many it was a nostalgic one, full of experiences, character building, testing of endurance, will power and stamina. The mountain peak Nag Tibba was a challenge which my terrific bunch of girls and boys were determined to conquer, come what may. That it was a tough climb would be an understatement, considering that at least three of six students had never been out on any sort of independent strenuous outing, let alone climbing 10,000 ft in the bitter cold. Showing exemplary leadership qualities was Arnav Saluja, the newly appointed school captain. He was made In -Charge of the camp discipline and all other matters and he rose to the occasion and showed that he indeed possessed the skills and patience to be a good leader. Not behind by any means was our ex school captain, Advait Viz who lent his past experience in guiding his juniors as well as his peers throughout the trip. The way the past and the present worked in tandem showed that leaders are indeed special, not trained. It was also a revelation how adversity brought out the best in the students and how well they bonded and gelled together in overcoming the difficult terrain, sharing and caring for each other, making quick decisions, helping each other to finally achieve their goal.

The service part of CAS was one of the best parts of the trip. The girls and boys worked with all dedication and sincerity, showing that their compassionate and empathy were not only words. They indeed “WALKED THEIR TALK.” I have no hesitancy in saying that this bunch is the most talented and thinking lot in the entire school and I am proud to be their teacher.

Finally, during the rafting trip at Shivpuri in Rishikesh, our boys and girls learnt to overcome true, personal fear and exemplify what the IB CAS spirit is all about. They set out for the 14km stretch, some without any previous experience, some without swimming skills, and yet at the end emerged with loads of confidence in having conquered the rapids. They had fun too, by the way.

It would be improper on my part if I do not make a special mention of Mr Yashpal Rana, who played a major role in helping Meera throughout the trip, keeping all in high spirits with his cheerful spirited jokes, support and stamina. Snehasish, Mohak and Advait too, for their constant support to Debleena, Shakti and Shruti Sirohi in going up and down the mountain as well as the long trek back to Thature.

Trip...in Garhwal Mountains+Nag Tibba

Started off from the Selaqui gates on November, all enthusiastic for the upcoming adventures we might come across in our approach. Reached a village called ‘Pantwari’ at noon after a 6 hour long journey on a jerky mountain road. Then a couple of activities on the first day…Evening, we went to a nearby village Jaunsar, where we introduced ourselves to the villagers, the villagers showed us their cultural dance and we also danced the whole even ting with them. The best part was that we trekked in the Tehri Garhwal region because I personally like that area for its intense culture and its stunning scenery. The entire trip consisted only of trekking so after the trip, we were so tired that when we returned back to Selaqui on the 13th, after a 3 hours rafting in Rishikesh, we were so tired that still we do not want to pop out of the bed. But this trip was the last one when IB1 and IB2 would go together…so we had loads and loads of fun singing songs in the bus, dedicating it to each other. I will also not forget Meera saying “SHUT UP MAN” every now and then…This CAS Trip awarded us with more than 30 CAS Hours. Being unaware of what a CAS trip would be like, I was really excited and tempted to experience the real world outside. Living in difficult situations and seeing people in such poverty you realize how lucky you really are. The natural beautiful scenery of the mountains and wildlife was exotic and impressing. Although trekking and hiking was very tiring I was proud of myself for completing such a task with a lot of help from my peers. Meeting children from different places and being in their situations and habitats was a worthwhile experience as well as a big realization in life. I enjoyed the trip tremendously and have learnt a lot.

The IB CAS trip to the camps in the Pantwari village began on 9th Nov, 2008 and lasted till 13th Nov, 2008. It was a five day trip in which we did trekking, interaction with villagers and rafting. each activity was a good experience for me as it brought out the different qualities in me. The trekking to Nag Tibba that was at a height of 8000 feet helped me understand my endurance capacity which was more while climbing down the mountain than climbing up. Interaction with thee villagers helped me reveal the kindness and the helping nature in me. Rafting in the river Ganga helped me overcome the fear of being in deep water, only if I have a life jacket on.

More specifically, though, CAS helped me think and evaluate on the activities. We, the IB group were attracted away to a marvellous world, far away from high technology and confined mind spaces by our coordinator, Chiranjeet Sir to experience and live life in a world never lived bafore by us to the extreme. By this journey, we knew our strenghts with weaknesses and also our capacities, not only to bare things and people in life, but also ourselves. We learnt the esssence of inter and intra human relationships. And also,need to strengthen human cooperation among ourselves for existence and survival. In a nut shell, we kicked the earth, smellt our sweat,enjoyed and relaxed our bodies in the sweet coldness at the tip of Nag Tibba,saw the sun take birth from its egg stage to adult stage,cunningly threw away our sins in the purity of Ganges and returned to our holy place of education and prosperity..... And yes, we had great fun!!!!!

It was the real adventure and it gave us a chance to become a natural man. Through this activity, I understood many values in which I cannot realize in practical society such like an importance of water and culture of the other traditional village. The villages are completely different from our society but it does not mean that the tradition is bad. There are many things that is difficult and tough.When I did trekking, it made me to overcome my limit. As these physical activities, the limit has extended so from next time I can do more and better than before. When people overstep their limit, it make them to develop and be strong them. It was the fantastic experience and it gave so many of experience in which cannot experience in Korea. The most memorable thing is watching the sun rising in the 10,000ft mountain. It was very too tough and hard to climb. At first time, whenever I got tired it depressed me to do it. However finally I achieved it. after doing the Trekking and Rafting, I got a confidence to do these activities. This experience made me to get confedence, skills and memories.

Wow... 10,000 feet high up in the sky! It was an experience thats for sure. Especially when we had started our trek up to Nag Tibba on the 11th not knowing what to expect we all packed our things, had breakfast and got our pack of cookies and candy and started out at 'round about 7 in the morning. We would stop every now and then and wonder when we would finally reach our dstination which for the day was only 2,000 feet below the peak [Nag Tibba]. Everytime we would ask our guide how far we were and they would reply with a slight smirk on their faces saying," bus betha ek ghuntha aur". As we reached we sat for sometime while our lunch was being prepared and as everyone reached we had our meal and rested, talked, and prepared ourselves for another day. Rafting was also something i enjoyed immensly i was put in the front to weigh down the raft whenever their was a rapid [exciting, and plus i saved the rest of them from getting wet.lol] In short our trip to Nag Tibba and Rishikesh was one I will never forget being our last trip. Thanks to everyone who helped make this trip possible, thank you Chiranjeet Sir and Rana Sir for motivating us every step of the way. *Sabreena*

My final CAS trip started on the 9th of Nov 2008, like all the other IB students I was excited too. We started of with a long bus drive to a place named Pantwadi, where our base camp was located. We visited the local villages and the Govt. school. It was an amazing experience to speak to such hard working and talented students. After two days we trekked till 8000ft to a place named NagTibba where we pitched out tents. It was freezing cold and I still wonder how I survived trauma. The best part about the trek was waiting for me; the next day we climbed 2000ft more to watch the sun rise. I even did some thing I had never done before rafting and cliff jumping. Swimming in cold Ganga water was incredible. My last IB trip will always remain as a remarkable memory.

This IB Cas trip was the most meemorable experiene of my life.Although all of the activities I did were part of the required CAS programme, I feel that I have acquired more than just a part of a diploma from my work. I have gained life-experience, friends, great memories, and more importantly I have learned that life is not making yourself happy as much as it is seeing how your life can impact others. Sure, I enjoy it when things are going my way, but it so greatly pleases me when there are others that are happy because of me. I have just finished by tenure as the school captain. Many times I fell that this is more important. Living in country where people often times only pay attention to themselves when walking down the street, I have come to realize the positive effect we can have on other people’s lives if we just to the extra step.We trekked the complete day for three days, we camped and last but not the least we did rafting which was a very memorable experience.

The trip started with me singing "we dont need no ed-jucation..." and ended with a deep sleep inside my blanket like a tired mule. 10 hours of continuous trekking was adventurous, fun and at the same time a little tiring. i learnt how to use the wild toilets mother nature has provided us with and also that im not a good swimmer after jumping into that freezing river water at Rishikesh. But the best part is we learnt a new culture, a new dimension to action and a lot more attitudes and attributes. A good way to end our last trip! I enjoyed it even though i stayed without having a bath for 4 days! :)

This trip was very special and amazing to me as this was the first time of rafting in my life. It was little different from other trips that it make us feel that we have dome something and of course we enjoyed the trip. My first ever CAS trip got me excited initially and it definitely didn’t let me down. The exhaustion of trekking just added to its flavour. Memories of helplessness while trekking uphill, my body going numb during the icy nights and of seeing one of the most beautiful sight of the million stars up in the sky with the mountains protecting them like shadows will always light my memory up. Visiting the local school and finding out that the girl population in the school was actually accurate, gave me contentment. It’s still a blur to me, and a bit difficult to acknowledge that being the lazy person I am: I defeated the capabilities I restricted myself to (but of course, with a lot of help).

Children are adorable. They are like divine gifts that parents get from the Almighty. Their eyes are full of innocence. They smile when they receive love and admiration, they cry when it is their first day at school away from their parents, they giggle when they mingle with their buddies, and they signify nothing but the pure and faithful love. They truly symbolise God.

Children's Day celebration is the tribute to childhood. John Kennedy, 35th US president has quoted it rightly, 'Children are the world's most valuable resource and its best hope for the future.' We cannot hide the fact that many children in India are not getting basic privileges like education. Many children are earning money instead of playing with toys. The true essence of Children's day is to understand the significance of childhood in our lives. The values and disciplines learned as a child are responsible for the kind of adulthood one has. Thus childhood is special and should be celebrated. Children's Day is to remind all youngsters and adults about children's right to enjoy their childhood without any boundaries and to be an educated adult in the future. Children's Day is to revise the right methods of raising children.

At SelaQui World School we have tried to empathise with the underprivileged children of the local community by making them feel special. For one day at least we managed to bond with them in a way in which our students, coming from economically strong background, could never imagine. The smiles and laughter seen in these kids was a joy to watch. We can imbibe some precious values in our students though generous acts of giving and sharing. Our students donated some of their belongings to other poor children. In such a way they got to know the real significance of this day. We pledge to make every 14th November special for the underprivileged. After all, 'Children will not remember us only for the material things we provided them but for the feeling that we cherished them.'

the trip/trek: -it was finally known to me that i am a nature boy, the trek revealed. -it was the longest and the most challenging trek that i have ever undertaken. -it was good that we went to a school of deprived kids and had a chat with them, it really made us know that mountainiers should not be ignored by the government and us. -rafting was good fun and it was a sport, all new. -pain in the calf and thighs are a reminding catharsis of all the huge and challenging feats i have conqured.

9th of november we left for the camp, where unknown challanges were waiting for us waiting to teach us and show us the reality of life.We visited the pantwari village and saw how a family of just 2 people became a whole village of 700 people.We were said that we will be seeing sunrise but were actually lured into a early morning trek through the roughest path i had ever been through. it was actually our endurence test.......On the third day we started our trek to nagtibba summit. It was a mixed kind of a trek. its beyond describing.......We reached summit by afternoon....... height 8000 ftnext day early morning we left our camp to trek another 2000ft to the nagtibba peak......the view was heavenly

The trip was labourious to the limits.Never had a better sleep - even with wilderness around.I was able summoned all my senses together.Was very moved by the mountain residences - felt at home.Nature moves and it moved in me.I am proud of the team - work displayed by my fellow SeQuins.Mussoorie stay was bliss.Thanks to Mr. Chiranjeet and Mr. Yashpal for keeping the troupe constantly taken care of.

The grades are reflective of the perceived cultural differences the students found between the works they studied and their own. Some were able to understand the authorial distinction while some felt that their own cultural values would have been compromised had they been in certain situations created by the author for his/her characters. The grades are also given based on the presentation of their project, the language and examples they have used and the overall impression.

Hi to all,

I would like to bring your attention towards the halfyearly result of IBD-I in Economics. Debolina Basu topped the class followed by Rishabh Aggarwal and Arnav Saluja. But there are some bottlenecks also. Abhishek, Shakti, Kwon, Vidit and Rishi Atwani are the one who needs some sleepless nights. I hope these boys work very hard to bring a good result in annuals. I wishthem good luck and congratulation once again to Debolina, Rishabh and Arnav.

Introduction to OLD MAN AND THE SEA

IB-1 are going to start reading Hemmingway's "Old Man and the Sea" as part of their IOP requirements. Once done they have to interpret the novel, making personal responses, review criticisms and submit assignments.

The following Questions and projects are lined up for their post reading work:

The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway

PART ONE: Form, Point of View, Structure

1. Hemingway might have written The Old Man and the Sea as a much longer novel, taking Santiago from his early childhood to his final dreams of the lions. What would have been lost if he had done this? What gained?

2. Hemingway might also have written The Old Man and the Sea as a short story, concentrating on the struggle with the fish, with the sea, and with the sharks--and probably telescoping or omitting the scenes before and after the struggle. What would have been lost or gained?

3. From whose point of view does Hemingway tell the story? Why did Hemingway choose to tell it this way? Did he make the right choice for this particular book? Why or why not?

4. In much of this book the old man is talking to himself. Is this heavy reliance on the introspective monologue a weakness or a strength? Explain your answer. Would this technique be a weakness or a strength in making a film of the book? Why or why not?

5. Why, where, and how effectively does Hemingway make use of the flashback technique? Analyze several specific flashbacks.

6. The entire novel is a single unit as written, but it is possible to divide the book logically into parts. How many parts are there and what happens in each section? Although there is no single right answer, your explanation should demonstrate the logic and accuracy of your divisions.

7. As Hemingway has built his book, does it end with a climax, an anti-climax, both, or neither? Explain your answer.

PART TWO: Sentence Structure, Diction, the Condensed Line

1. Hemingway is famous for his ability to pack meaning into a few simple words. Examine and comment on the following examples. Then find and discuss three more.

a. "He was beautiful, the old man remembered, and he had stayed." (p. 50)

b. "It jumped again and again in the acrobatics of its fear." (p. 72)

c. "Then the fish came alive, with his death in him." (p. 94)

d. "'You're tired, old man,' he said. 'You're tired inside.'" (p. 112)

e. "He had to sit down five times before he reached his shack." (p. 121)

2. Using the following three quotations as your evidence, describe the relationship Hemingway establishes between the old man and the boy. Then comment on the means by which he does it. You will have to examine the words, the implications, and the sentence structure. Consider, for instance, the effect of the way Hemingway strings his main clauses together with and on pages 9-10 and pages 121-122 -- exactly what you have been taught not to do. In what ways would the effect be different if Hemingway had subordinated one of his clauses and written, "Because the old man had taught him how to fish, the boy loved him"? Why doesn't he write on page 122, "When the boy saw that the old man was breathing and when he got a look at the old man's hands, he started to cry"?

a. "The old man had taught the boy to fish and the boy loved him." (p. 10)

b. "The boy keeps me alive." (p. 106)

c. "The boy saw that the old man was breathing and then he saw the old man's hands and he started to cry." (p. 122)

3. In describing the scars on Santiago's hands on page 10, Hemingway writes, "They were as old as erosions in a fishless desert." Is this simile appropriate and effective? Why or why not? Is the language as simple as Hemingway's language is supposed to be?

4. Look at the fourth sentence in the paragraph on page 28 beginning "Sometimes someone..." Is this the kind of sentence for which Hemingway is noted? Is it appropriate and effective in this context? Explain your answer.

5. Examine the following passage from page 35: "But the bird was almost out of sight now and nothing showed on the surface of the water but some patches of yellow, sun-bleached Sargasso weed and the purple, formalized, iridescent, gelatinous bladder of a Portuguese man-of-war floating close beside the boat. It turned on its side and then righted itself. It floated cheerfully as a bubble with its long deadly purple filaments trailing a yard behind it in the water." Do you find here the simple wording and short sentences said to be characteristic of Hemingway's style? How do you explain your findings?

6. How does Hemingway communicate to the reader the fact that Santiago speaks and thinks in Spanish?

7. Now look carefully at the wording and the sentence structure of Hemingway's final paragraph. Then describe and explain your findings: "Up the road, in his shack, the old man was sleeping again. He was still sleeping on his face and the boy was sitting by him watching him. The old man was dreaming about the lions." (p. 127)

8. Comment on any other features of Hemingway's diction and idiom that seem important.

9. Now that you have examined this sampling of passages from The Old Man and the Sea, what tentative conclusions are you ready to draw about Hemingway's diction and sentence structure? Find other passages that reinforce, modify, or change your present conclusions.

PART THREE: Meanings and Interpretations

1. a. Hemingway says of the old man on page 13, "He was too simple to wonder when he had attained humility." How do you interpret this statement? b. Humility has been defined as "the understatement of a powerful personality." What does this mean and to what extent does it apply to the kind of humility the old man has attained/

2. Discuss the role that luck plays in this book and consider the different shades of meaning Hemingway gives to it. (You will find references to luck on pages 9, 13, 32, 75, 116-117, and 125.)

3. Comment on each of the following passages, trying to relate it significantly to the book as a whole:

a. "There was no cast net and the boy remembered when they had sold it. But they went through this fiction every day. There was no pot of yellow rice and fish and the boy knew this too." (p. 16)

b. "Why did they make birds so delicate and fine as those sea swallows when the ocean can be so cruel?" (p. 29) Whom does the old man mean by "they"?

c. "'Take a good rest, small bird,' he said. 'Then go in and take your chance like any man or bird or fish.'" (p. 55)

d. "'I told the boy I was a strange old man,' he said. 'Now I must prove it.' "The thousand times that he had proved it meant nothing. Now he was proving it again. Each time was a new time and he never thought about the past when he was doing it." (p. 66)

e. "But it is good that we do not have to try to kill the sun or the moon or the stars. It is enough to live on the sea and kill our true brothers." (p. 75)

f. "'And pain does not matter to a man.'" (p. 84)

g. "The dentuso is cruel and able and strong and intelligent. But I was more intelligent than he was. Perhaps not, he thought. Perhaps I was only better armed." (p. 1030

h. "Fishing kills me exactly as it keeps me alive." (p. 106)

PART FOUR: Symbolism

1. Where is the one passage in the book that unmistakably alludes to Christ on the Cross? What does such symbolism add to the novel? Do you find any other passages that may be reinforcing the Christ imagery? Can you be sure that they are doing so? The old man is sometimes taken as a symbol of Christ on the Cross. How do you reconcile this notion with the old man's own comment on page 64, "I am not religious," which he follows up with a perfunctory rattling off of a batch of "Our Fathers" and "Hail Marys"?

2. How much convincing evidence do you find for regarding the old man as a symbol of man in general?

3. How much convincing evidence do you find for regarding the fish as more than just a marlin? If the fish is a symbol, what does he symbolize?

4. Are we justified in interpreting baseball and Joe DiMaggio as more than their literal selves? If so, what do they represent?

5. Does Hemingway encourage us to think of the sea in more than literal terms? If so, what is the sea standing for?

6. How do you interpret the young lions? Are they literal or symbolic or both, and why do you think so? If they are symbolic, what do they symbolize?

7. The great fish come in September, not in May. Santiago catches his big fish in September. Are we to take September only literally? If it is more than literal, what is it standing for?

8. Does Hemingway's text invite us to interpret the sharks as more than literal? If they are more than literal, what do they represent? What is their role in the general human drama?

WRITING ASSIGNMENTS:

1. Write a paper in which you comment fully and specifically on the significance for the entire book of Santiago's words, "A man can be destroyed but not defeated." (p. 103) To do this you will need to start with an exploration of possible meanings of the two words destroyed and defeated.

2. Write a full, detailed answer to this question: Were you satisfied that the ending of Hemingway's book makes a believable, meaningful, and moving fulfillment of the old man's experience? For this paper, consider the ending to include all that takes place from the time the first shark comes to the time of the old man's final dreaming of the young lions.

3. Write a carefully planned paper in which you explore the meaning and the appropriateness of Hemingway's title. In doing this, you will need to examine carefully each word of the title and you will also need to consider other possible titles that Hemingway might have used.

4. Now that you have examined the form, style, literary devices, levels of meaning, and theme of Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea, the toughest and perhaps the most important question of all remains: As a literary work, how good is it? Write a composition in which you give this question the most detailed, thoughtful, honest answer of which you are capable. Although you cannot force your reader to agree with your judgment, try to win his respect for the thoroughness, the fairmindedness, and the insight that have gone into the making of that judgment.

5. A character in John Steinbeck's East of Eden says, "No story has power, nor will it last, unless we feel in ourselves that it is true, and true of us...If a story is not about the hearer he will not listen." It might at first seem strange that you might find anything "true" about yourself in The Old Man and the Sea, but some of your contemporaries have "listened' to this story as if it were about themselves. Write a carefully prepared paper in which you consider what the book has to say to you, where you came in, what you heard about yourself as you "listened." Choose this topic only if you honestly feel that the book had something to say to you.

6. In the Preface to one of his novels, Joseph Conrad says that his task as a writer is "by the power of the written word, to make you hear, to make you feel--it is, before all, to make you see. That--and no more, and it is everything." Write a carefully prepared paper in which you show fully and specifically the extent to which Hemingway in The Old Man and the Sea fulfills the writer's task of making you hear, feel, and--above all--see. You will want to give special attention to all the possible meanings in that word see.
